Sport Successes
1970 – The first Arctic Winter Games (AWG) were held in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories featuring traditional games. Featuring 500 athletes from Alaska, the Northwest Territories, and the Yukon.
1974 – The thirdAWG were hosted in Alaska (USA) featuring 950 athletes. This was the first time these Games were held outside of Canada.
1977 – Chief Wilton Littlechild first proposed the idea of the World Indigenous Games at the Annual Assembly of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples in Sweden where it passed unanimously.
1990 – The first North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) were held on Treaty 6 Territory in Edmonton, Alberta featuring 3000 athletes and 15 sports.
1995 – The third NAIG were hosted in Minnesota (USA) featuring 8500 participants in 17 sports. This was the first time these Games were held outside of Canada.
2015 – The first World Indigenous Games were held in Palmas, Brazil featuring 2000 athletes from over 30 countries.
2017 –The second World Indigenous Nations Games were held on Treaty 6 Territory in Edmonton, Alberta with over 1600 athletes from over 30 countries.
2017 – The ninth NAIG were held in Toronto, Ontario featuring 5000 athletes in 15 sports.
2020 – 50th Anniversary of the Arctic Winter Games. First time since their inception that they were cancelled due to COVID-19.
2020 – 30th Anniversary of the North American Indigenous Games were cancelled due to COVID-19.
